Artist of the Week: Miles Fisher
// October 27th, 2009 // No Comments » // Music

Musician? Actor? Something more? Indeed, to define the artist that is Miles Fisher requires some complex thinking. He’s made quite a few nighttime television appearances - The Cleaner, Mad Men and Gossip Girl come to mind - several feature films - Superhero Movie, God and Generals, for instance – and he recently recorded and released a self-titled EP. In college, leading him to perform in over thirty countries throughout six continents, he was a part of the legendary Harvard Krokodiloes. At the request of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Fisher performed solo in front of the entire U.S. Supreme Court. Miles, furthermore, has a unique ability to morph into the unique styles and mannerisms portrayed by Tom Cruise and Christian Bale. In short, he’s kind of a big deal.
Combining his strong acting ability with natural musical tendencies, Miles Fisher recently created the self-satire-recognition music video “This Must Be The Place.” Wow-ing more than two-hundred thousand viewers in the twenty-four hours following its release, the amount of time, effort and talent that went into the project is breathtaking. Perhaps most worthy of recognition is his Christian Bale impersonation that is spot on accompanied by a clever take on the American Psycho theme.

Curt@!n$: Mode
// September 18th, 2009 // No Comments » // Music
Six months past its debut on Levi Maestro’s web show, Maestro Knows, Curt@!n$’s “Mode” has finally been released! During the episode, Curt@!n$ plays a snippet of the song for Levi. While Maestro bops his head, Curt@!n$ sings along and flashes his Air Yeezys to the rhyme: “I rock things that aren’t out yet, cant find this at no outlet…”“Mode” is different then most of Curt@!n$’s other work, but the entertaining song will no doubt receive its fair share of plays from speakers of Curt@!n$ fans across the globe. Purchase the song on iTunes or, instead, download it here via 2dopeboyz. For the enthusiasts out there, check out the original Maestro Knows episode below.

Blink in Black
// September 9th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Music

Blink was dressed in all black on the night of the 29th in Hartford Connecticut—rockin’ out the Dodge Music Center as they mourned the death of their good friend DJ AM. Whether the wardrobe choice was a reflection of sorrow or in the spirit of their rebel image remains a mystery, but a message was nonetheless conveyed. The band opened with a classic “Dumpweed” display followed by a good number of songs from their newest [self-titled] album, including: “Violence,” “Always,” “I Miss You,” “Feeling This” and “Asthenia.” Between Tom’s obscene gestures, a moment of silence and Mark’s memorable tears the band still found time for some classics—most notably “Don’t Leave Me,” “All the Small Things,” and of course their vintage closer: “Dammit.”
Despite the sadness of the group, Blink managed to put on an excellent show. It’s clear the boys are established veterans of the pop-punk scene—even having openly admitted their music to be, for the most part, a middle-school-adolescent escapade. The night was a black one for Blink 182, but hopefully the group can find peace of mind in the death of their dear friend as they trek forth with their westward tour.

JET: Shaka Rock
// August 28th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Music

Just take a hint of modern lime and add it to the classic taste of rock and roll. You’ll probably get something close to JET’s latest album: Shaka Rock. Hard-hitting riffs, smooth melodies, and Nic Cester’s emphatic voice comprise the majority of the album—though presented in a neo-retro tone, we think these elements offer everything a JET head could desire. Don’t worry, JET hasn’t lost their AC/DC or Zeppelin influence, they’ve simply learned to channel it through a modern vibe.
Vocal melody seems to be the primary factor in defining JET’s revamped sound. Check out “Seventeen” and “Walk”—these tracks highlight their new style quite nicely. But just because the boys are changing direction slightly doesn’t mean they’ve lost their classic approach altogether. JET’s lyrical themes of anti-conformity, partying hard, loneliness, and sexy women are hotter than ever. Lend your ear to “She’s a Genius” and you’ll see what we mean.
Shaka Rock is now available on iTunes.
